Wow. What a year 2016 has been for Porsches over at Hot Wheels. The 964 debuted in Track Day, and though I don't have one in hand, it looks like a superstar. The 356 also joins the ranks of Hot Wheels Porsche brilliance. Then there's the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. It's not a bad casting, I know I was more than excited to find it on the pegs, but how does it measure up against the best 3 Hot Wheels Porsche 911's?
In my books, the best '911's' to-date are the Porsche 993 GT3, the 934 RSR Turbo and the 911 GT2. I know they may not technically all be 911's, but I'll keep the terminology simple for this post. The simple answer is that the new 2016 911 GT3 RS doesn't measure up. It's a good casting, but those 3 are great castings. Mattel seems to get the front end nailed down on the casting. While it could've extended a little less past the headlights, it's otherwise perfect. The back end is where things start going terribly wrong. It seems crunched in or cut off. While that wouldn't be a huge problem on some castings, it ruins that iconic 911 slope. It's more Nissan 350z than Porsche 911.
Now, let's talk spoilers. I'm actually a fan of metal spoilers molded onto the casting. The plastic ones tend to look like haphazard afterthoughts. On the GT3 RS, though, the metal spoiler looks all wrong. It's too wide for the casting. The 911 tapers in at the back while the spoiler goes wide. It needs to be smaller and somehow more integrated into the casting. Look at the 993 or the 934, both have smaller spoilers in real life, so it's an easier task to make them proportional, but they look proper.
In the end, the GT3 RS is anything but a disaster. Conversely, it won't join the ranks of legendary Porsche castings like the other 2 new Porsche models this year will: The 356A and the 964. Enjoy the photos and please let me know what you think!
