More than Just a Mainline Wheel Debut...

With the Formula 1 World Championships wrapping up this morning, I thought it a good time to take a peek at the recent Hot Wheels Speedy Perez release. With 2017 Hot Wheels mainlines showing up in stores, the Speedy Perez has gained some attention for its debut of a new Hot Wheels mainline wheel. The Swirl 6 Spoke wheel is new for 2017 and is well suited to racing cars and fantasy releases. It's not a bad wheel, but I'm not exactly blown away by it either.

While the big story around the Speedy Perez is the Swirl 6SP debut, there's another story behind the car. Us collectors often spurn fantasy models like this one, but there's a cool background to this one, even if the model itself doesn't look so cool. The Speedy Perez was designed in collaboration with Mexican Formula 1 driver Sergio (Checo) Perez. Checo stood on the podium at the iconic Monaco Grand Prix earlier this year, and is a consistent fan favorite. It's pretty cool to see an F1 driver design a Hot Wheels car, even if it's not a particularly pretty Hot Wheels car.

The Speedy Perez also features the logo for the Checo Perez Foundation, an organization committed to underprivileged youth in Mexico. Whether any proceeds actually go to the Foundation or not, it's great marketing for a great charity, and great to see Mattel get on board with it!

If you're anything like me, I'm guessing you're not overly impressed by the casting itself, but how do you feel about the new wheels and the Checo Perez collaboration? Let me know in the comments below. Enjoy!

Happy Collecting!!
