In the 1/64 diecast collecting world it's almost impossible to hear 'JDM' mentioned without hearing 'hype' mentioned in the same sentence. The complaints about the hype are nearly as annoying as the hype itself. But where there's smoke, there's usually fire, and JDM is over-hyped these days. Yet here I am, jumping on the bandwagon before it rolls past.
The Fairlady 2000 is too beautiful not to hype. I'm not enthused over it simply because it's JDM. Rather, it's a stunning piece of motor history. Every proper motor aficionado loves a good roadster. Whether it's the iconic Miata, Triumph Spitfire or Porsche Boxster, roadsters are fun-to-drive and attract cult followings. The Datsun Fairlady 2000 is a lesser known but no less classic roadster. I don't know much about the real car, but the Hot Wheels has made me an instant fan.
Sporty 2-seaters are always great, but the Fairlady stands head and shoulders above the rest. It's one of those 'instant-classic' mainlines. Like the Porsche 356A Outlaw last year, the Fairlady 2000 leaves me shaking my head at the fact that I only doled out a buck for it. The realism is there. The detail is fantastic. The licensing is packed in, between Datsun, Yokohama and Japanese Nostalgic Car. What could've been a bland beige deco comes alive with contrasting maroon details. The rims feel right. In fact, everything feels right.
JDM fanboy or not, if there's such thing as an 'instant classic' in the Hot Wheels mainline world, this is it. And I'm not ashamed to hype it. Enjoy!
