It's another head-to-head between Matchbox and Hot Wheels today. This Mattel Bronco duo features lime green paint, making for a nice comparison between the first-gen Ford off-roaders. On the Hot Wheels side of the court is the 'Custom Ford Bronco' while Matchbox sends the Ford Bronco 4x4 (1972) into battle. Both Broncos are done in the lifted/off-road style. Both Broncos also feature soft-tops.
I love 1st-gen Ford Broncos. Greenlight makes the best example, with the Hot Wheels 1968 Ford Bronco a close-second place. Since both of those Broncos are hard-tops and premiums they're a little nicer than these two. But at a buck it doesn't get much bettter than this duo.
In terms of proportions, the Matchbox and Hot Wheels are almost identical in size. The Hot Wheels gets a taller ride height. The other noticeable difference is that the Matchbox retains a stock windshield and frame in metal, while the Hot Wheels 'windshield' is part of the plastic roll cage. Both Broncos are obviously customized, but the Hot Wheels is a little more custom than the Matchbox. As we know, Matchbox tends to get more of a stock look when compared to a Hot Wheels casting of the same 1:1 vehicle. That trend continues here.
Like with the Austin Minis we looked at the other day, the Matchbox wins this comparison. The Matchbox casting is better as it retains more of the real thing's hallmarks. The molded 'FORD' lettering in the tailgate, the original windshield frame, the groove running down the casting's side and side mirrors all make for a more realistic casting. The Matchbox is more realistic and more Ford Bronco. The Hot Wheels gets kudos for its wild design and off-road capabilities. The metal grille and headlights are also preferred to the plastic equivalents on the Matchbox. One final point of note is the Matchbox's trailer hitch. Matchbox casts a few trailers, which explain the hitch.
Oh, and I neglected to mention that the deco on the Matchbox Bronco pays homage to Matchbox collector and former ambassador Dirk Schleuer and the Leipzig Toy Fair he organizes in Germany.
