The 1968 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ-40 or the Land Rover Ninety? Okay, fine, not a fair question. A Land Cruiser from the '60's or a Land Rover from the '80's. Maybe it's not a fair question, but it's a fun question. Both the Land Rover Ninety and the Toyota Land Cruiser are iconic Matchbox castings. They're also probably the 2 most iconic off-road utility vehicles of all time. Oh, and did I mention they both have 'Land' in their names?
It's hard to pick a favorite between two legendary off-roaders. While Land Rover hails from the UK and Toyota from Japan, both vehicles can be found on every continent on earth. (save Antarctica). During my travels to Brazil I spent lots of time in a diesel Land Cruiser. It's a difficult choice between the two Matchbox castings and the two real vehicles. The Ninety was designed as a shorter wheel-base alternative to the 110. The result was a more compact and maneuverable beast. The Toyota was originally designed for the Japanese military, but has seen a myriad of applications in its decades of existence.
My choice? Personally, I prefer the Toyota casting. It's a little more compact and well scaled than the Land Rover. There's no wrong choice though. Both castings are Matchbox legends. In real life? I'm not even going to open that can of worms, but I'd love to hear your choices in the comments below. Enjoy!!
Happy Collecting!!
