Different Price Points and a Sweet Pair of Bright Red Mustangs!

I've never been a huge Ford Mustang fan. Of course the 1st generation Mustangs are undeniable classics, but aside from a few performance versions, few ponies have caught my eye since 1973. That's changed with the 6th generation Mustang. Recent Mustangs have impressively sharp styling and thankfully diecast manufacturers are replicating it perfectly.

My two favorites so far are the 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R from Hot Wheels and the 2015 Ford Mustang GT from Auto World. Of course anything bearing Carroll Shelby's namesake gets my full attention and anything from Auto World will be cast perfectly.

Comparing these two Mustangs head-to-head is unfair. The GT350R and GT are two separate Mustang models and the Auto World costs around $6 US while the Hot Wheels sits at $1. Also, the Auto World is an Ultra Red chase piece which makes it pretty hard to beat. Like Plato (or was it Aristotle) we'll treat likes alike and unlikes unalike.

The only real similarities between these two Mustangs is that they're both red and they're both exceptionally well cast. The Auto World is as perfectly scaled as one can buy in 1:64. Knowing that, the Hot Wheels proportions measure up quite closely considering it's a $1 car. The Hot Wheels grabbed my attention as soon as it debuted in blue because it's proportions looked intuitively right. Compare it to the Auto World and you'll see the scale is about as good as it gets for a $1 Hot Wheels. The racing stripes and taillight detail are awesome on the Hot Wheels mainline. I have to say I'm impressed.

If you've got a dollar, you won't be disappointed if you drop it on the 350R. If you've got $5-$10, go buy the Auto World in standard color. I ponied up (sorry) for the chase piece, but aside from the spectacular red paint the non-Ultra Reds are just as nice and much cheaper. The Auto World is a perfect 10 as usual. It rolls well, the hood opens, the engine bay it reveals underneath actually looks like a modern Mustang V8 rather than a generic hunk of diecast some manufacturers pass off as an engine, it's got accurate taillight and front tampos, along with door lines and license plates. In other words, it can't be beat.

At the end of the day, you've got 2 impressive offerings of the 6th-gen Mustang in 1/64 scale. The Auto World represents a highly detailed, perfectly scaled replication of the mass produced GT for under 10 bucks. The Hot Wheels GT350R represents the performance end of the Mustang spectrum and is surprisingly well scaled and detailed for a $1 car while demonstrating just how good Hot Wheels castings have become over the years.

Enjoy the photos, that Ultra Red is drop-dead...

Happy Collecting!!
