2009 was 7 years ago. Let that sink in for a second. Once you've gotten over that, remember that in 2009 Matchbox was churning out licensed vehicles with realistic wheels, no side tampos and detailed front/rear tampo work. To use a term coined by Lamley Group, 2009 was the heart of the Matchbox 'Golden Age'.
Fast forward to 2016 and Matchbox is doing it right. Lots of clean, licensed models, combined with realistic workhorses that range from shuttle busses to Zambonis. That combination makes for both play value and collectability. One of the hottest new models for 2016 is the Chrysler 300C. I've placed it next to 2 models from the 2009 Matchbox basic line: The Mercedes Benz CLS500 and the Bentley Continental GT. All I can say is 'wow'. The 300C looks like it's straight out of 2009. And that's a compliment. The wheel choice on the 300C is identical to the 2009 models. No side tampos? Check. Exquisite front and rear detailing? You bet.
Is the Golden Age back? Maybe, but it doesn't really matter. What matters is that Matchbox produced some beautiful models in 2009 and if they use that format again, even if it's only on select models, we'll have some fantastic collectibles. Enjoy!
Happy Collecting!!
