A Brand New Fire-Themed 5-Pack from Matchbox!

2017 continues to go swimmingly for the orange brand. We're 2 months into 2017, and the folks at Matchbox have delivered some coveted basic models and a few 5-packs. None of the 5-packs have stood out to me until a recent firehouse themed 5-pack started showing up at WalMarts across Canada and the US.

Since I'm international, there's no name on this 5-pack, so I'll call it the Fire-5 for now. The realistic-generic Hazard Squad, the Mack Pumper and most excitingly the returning 1939 Chevy Sedan Delivery are all highly collectible models. While I could do without the other 2 models, 3 out of 5 ain't bad for a 5-pack these days. I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking. Enjoy!

Car Culture Can't Cool Down: Hot Wheels Air Coolin'!

Yawn, another amazing Car Culture set. I'm honestly not even surprised anymore. After 6 fantastic waves, we just expect the next mix to be great. Mattel set the bar high with the Hot Wheels Japan Historics Mix and hasn't slowed down since. Car Culture is the hottest thing in diecast, with collectors looking forward to each new mix more than the last.

Air Coolin' doesn't let the Car Culture-crazed collector down. Like Japan Historics and Track Day, Air Coolin' sets the bar high. The Porsche 356A gets its first premium release, and boy, is it beautiful. The 356 really encapsulates the whole 'clean diecast' thing. Beautiful blue paint, minimal decos and little racing details are the hallmarks, with a period-correct Castrol logo rounding out the package. I have a tin sign with that very Castrol logo on my wall, so I really enjoy that little touch.

My second favorite of the set is the brand-new-casting 60's Fiat 500D Modificado. The Fiat perfectly complements the modern-day Fiat 500 from the Hot Wheels Car Culture Euro Style mix and is well styled in brilliant white and Firestone tampo work. The 500 is tiny, as it should be, and the scale is pretty spot-on as you'll see in the photo below with the Greenlight Dodge D-100.

I spent a fair bit of time hmm-ing and hawing over which model was my 3rd favorite. After a bunch of wasted time, I realized I couldn't order the final 3. The Custom VW Beetle is presented very well and a nice casting, but doesn't have that 'it factor' that sets it apart. The SP2 is colorful and the new wheel style looks perfect. However, the casting looks a little big and the lack of front/rear tampos really sticks out on this one. The VW Squareback looks a little bland from a distance, but its beauty is subtle. The tampo work is special on this one and the 'Square Force 1' deco is a clever touch. My top 2 are locks, but 3-5 are too hard to order. Each has it's pros and cons. Since I can't choose, go ahead and choose for me in the comments below. Enjoy the photos!
